Sustainability

We strive to keep any negative impact on the environment as low as possible.

These are our current sustainable practices, which are constantly under review.

Anchor 1

Sowing & growing

  • We grow all our plants in Melcourt organic, peat free compost which is Soil Association approved

  • We make leaf mould from our fallen leaves which we use as a mulch

  • We only feed our plants homemade nettle or comfrey feed, or organic liquid seaweed.

OUR PACKAGING IS 100% SUSTAINABLE!
We are very proud to have created an innovative packing system that not only protects our little plants in transit, but critically causes no harm to the planet too. Please see below.

Watering

We have several water butts placed around our plot.  Together they collect hundreds of litres rainwater, which, during an average year, contributes greatly to the total water we use to water little our plants.

Rainwater also benefits our plants as it contains small amounts of minerals and is slightly acidic.  This slight acidity helps to release the minerals to the plants and so makes rainwater a more nutritious option than other types of water.

Working towards zero plastic ....

In line with current advice, we are taking care of and re-using our remaining plastic seed and plug trays.  As they reach the end of their lives and are no longer fit for use, we are replacing them with sustainable alternatives.

So far our favourite alternative to plastic are these natural rubber plug trays.

Our eco friendly packaging ...

All orders are picked and packed with care and attention, ensuring you receive your plants in perfect condition every time.

Firstly, we remove our plug plants from their trays, carefully wrap them in biodegradable and compostable  paper starch polysheets (compliant with EN13432) which we cut to size from eco friendly bin liners ( Polybags UK) before wrapping them further in recycled magazine sheets / recycled brown paper.

Each variety is clearly labelled with labels & tape which are entirely biodegradable and compostable (Cloud Labels)

(For the tape please see details of Kraft tape below)

Label material: biodegradable & compostable - 95% sugarcane Fibres, 5% hemp & linen

Label adhesive: S9500 acrylic based biodegradable

adhesive

Your plants are then carefully packed into cardboard boxes with the necessary paperwork then secured with Kraft paper/natural rubber based adhesive tape, which is fully biodegradeable and compostable. Finally your parcel is 'FRAGILE' stamped using a vegetable, water based eco-ink.

Our postage labels are also eco friendly, exactly as the plant name labels above.

For our packaging, in the first instance we re-use boxes and fillers that we have received. Our new boxes are FSC sustainable and recycled.
